I spent three months on this project, and it was an unforgettable, special time — I would almost say the most adventurous of my life. However, one thing is clear: this place is definitely one of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen. The island is very remote, and even the boat ride to get there is an unforgettable adventure, taking you through Amazon-like river canals, past a massive river mouth where you can spot crocodiles, manatees, and, with a bit of luck, even dolphins. It leads to a small, simple accommodation on the island. You’re surrounded by the sea and beach on one side and jungle and river on the other, making it an ideal place to experience the biodiversity of Costa Rica (crocodiles, sloths, three different species of monkeys, toucans, sea turtles, snakes, and countless bird species).
The accommodation is very basic, and internet access is only available on the beach, making it the perfect place to disconnect. Dora cooks delicious food, and it’s always fun to talk to her because she is so humorous and positive. This project is perfect for not only enjoying the natural experience but also chatting with a few local residents and diving into the “Pura Vida” culture of Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast, while simultaneously improving your Spanish skills.
